IAAPA Funworld Magazine says ‘Pigeon Forge getting a water-powered funhouse on steroids’

Posted by – February 2, 2011

From the February 2011 issue of IAAPA Funworld Magazine — As everyone knows, bad things happened to the Titanic when it ventured out onto the water. The Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, however, is hoping very good things will happen to its guests in 2013 when they visit the museum’s newest offering, Water Magic.

Water Magic will make a big splash in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Set on a 12-acre site directly across the street from the museum, the $40 million attraction will be designed to allow guests to discover new and creative ways to have fun with water without really getting soaked. Water Magic is not a waterpark—in fact, most guests will probably wear their street clothes into the venue.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of water frolicking going on. In fact, Water Magic’s creators describe it as a “water-powered funhouse on steroids” and say its motto will be, “Get me wet.”

According to John Joslyn, who coowns the Titanic Museum with his wife, Mary Kellogg-Joslyn, he and his creative team—including Bob Fleming, president of Idletime, which designed Titanic Museums in both Pigeon Forge and Branson, Missouri— were meeting back in 2009 and looking at what they could possibly do to creatively expand the museum.

“Finally I asked, ‘What captivates children and adults more than anything else?’ and Bob replied, ‘It’s water,’ and I said, ‘Yes!’ So we thought, ‘Could we have a room where people could walk on water, or could we have a bubble room, or do a water theater?’ It’s just one of those simplistic things in life that hits you like a lightning bolt, and it just sort of took us all aback in the room.”

Water Magic will be a year-round attraction set in a 40,000-square-foot building. One of the first sites visitors will see is a 100-foot kinetic energy sculpture topped by a 1,000-gallon bucket that will spill water down onto Water Magic’s grand entry plaza. Guests will then proceed to Emporium Square, a two-story atrium filled with water-driven gadgets, like water fountains of all shapes and sizes synchronized to music.

Emporium Square will lead to several gateways, and visitors can choose which one will start their adventure. Each leads to a different gallery; some that will allow guests to feel as if they’re walking on water, while others, like the “Mirror Maze,” will present a puzzle that carries with it the chance of getting wet; still others, like “The Water Tunnel,” will wrap visitors in a cocoon of water.

The Water Theater will present “Imagination Rhapsody,” a musical melee of water jets and water spouts where guests can create their own water symphonies, with the possibility of a missed note sending a wave of water their way. In the “Deep-Sea Expedition” venue, guests will experience an exploratory dive to the ocean floor.

The owners say Water Magic will also be “wrapped in green,” a reference to its environmental stewardship. “We do have a responsibility to the environment,” says Joslyn, “and if we’re moving that much water, we should be able to figure out how to recycle it, how to use it for heating and cooling, and for power generation, which we will do. Plus, the people in the fountain business have really explored ways to recycle water, and if we have rainwater coming down in a deluge in the parking lot, we should be able to capture it and use it. We’re going to use water in smart ways.”

Cityview Magazine’s new issue features Titanic Museum, Wilderness at the Smokies and McGhee Tyson Airport

Posted by – January 11, 2011

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The new issue of Cityview Magazine (Jan./Feb. 2011) is packed with great information.  The “Knoxville’s Top Entrepreneurs” story features 9-year old Luke Copas, who wrote a book about the Titanic last year that was published with some help from Titanic Museum Attraction owner Mary Kellogg-Joslyn (Luke’s on the cover!).  You can read Luke’s entire story here.

While people love to complain about the high cost of air travel, there are plenty of affordable destinations available from Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport.  One of them is sunny Miami – and Cityview editor Colleen Oakley highlights some of Miami’s best restaurants, clubs, museums and places to stay in the current issue.

Ever wonder what’s coming next to Wilderness at the Smokies resort in Sevierville?  Check out the fascinating “5 Minutes With …” story about Pat and Pete Helland, owners of Wilderness resort, to find out.  You’ll not only find out what they plan next for their wildly successful waterparks, but the background about these amazing brothers (referenced in the story as “The Wright Brothers of the resort scene”).

Cityview Magazine is available at stores and bookstores throughout Tennessee as well as online at www.CityviewMag.com.  Don’t miss this month’s issue!

One-of-a-kind new $40 million “Water Magic” attraction will make a huge splash in Pigeon Forge

Posted by – November 23, 2010

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – Nothing fascinates children of all ages like water.  They are drawn to it, mesmerized by it and love being surrounded by it.  Next year, John Joslyn plans to give kids (and kids at heart) just what they want with his brand new “Water Magic” attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

John Joslyn

Joslyn announced Tuesday morning that he is moving forward with plans to build the more than $40 million Water Magic across from his Titanic Museum Attraction on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge.  Joslyn said construction would begin early next year and he hopes to open the new attraction by the summer of 2013.  Contrary to early reports, Joslyn said Water Magic is not a water park.

Joslyn has been welcomed warmly to East Tennessee, and the Titanic Museum Attraction he co-owns and operates with his wife Mary Kellogg-Joslyn, has been an overwhelming hit with tourists – averaging 100,000 visitors per month.  Like everything the Joslyn’s have been involved with, Water Magic will leave its guests amazed and in awe.

John Joslyn said, “When we came to East Tennessee last April, we had evaluated a number of tourism markets.  We have experience in Orlando and in Branson – so we truly believed our concepts would succeed here.  We’ve surpassed our projections here in Pigeon Forge in almost every way, so it should come as no surprise that we want to build our next major attraction right here.  I can assure you, Water Magic will exceed any of your expectations – this one is simply going to blow you away.

“Water Magic will be one of the world’s most innovative and magical family-themed attractions.  Full of water but not a water park – Water Magic will introduce a new dimension in family entertainment for all generations.”

Like Joslyn’s Titanic Museum Attraction across the Parkway, the brand new Water Magic will be impossible for visitors to miss.  The entire attraction will be wrapped in GREEN as it recycles water, generates electricity, and produces its own HVAC in a unique, new, eco-conscious building of the future.  From the Parkway, the building itself will be an amazing sight.

Water Magic is a one-of-a-kind attraction that will offer guests a splashing good time, beginning with a 100-foot kinetic-energy sculpture.  Crowned with a 1,000-gallon water bucket that haphazardly topples over on a regular basis, this iconic sculpture will feature water that cascades down and onto Water Magic’s grand entry plaza.  Like other Joslyn projects, Water Magic will be unparalleled in its commitment to every aspect of the guest experience.

Artist's conceptual rendering of Water Magic

The first stop for visitors to Water Magic will be Emporium Square, a two-story atrium with a kaleidoscope of water-driven gadgetry that immediately captures the imagination.  Fountains of water, in every shape, size and description, will be synchronized to music, creating a marvelous water wonderland.  Center stage will be occupied by none other than the “Wizard,” the impresario of Water Magic.  Guests will find he has a devilish sense of humor and loves to make people wet.

Emporium Square will lead to a number of portals, and each guest may choose the one that begins his/her adventure.  Each portal flows into a different gallery that offers a fun experience with water—that mysterious, slippery, mesmerizing, reflective and hypnotic wet stuff that’s just plain fun.  Some galleries will allow guests to feel like they are walking on water, while the Water Tunnel will make them laugh out loud from the surprise burst of water they get as they enter.  And let’s not forget the Mirror Maze gauntlet that not only puzzles the mind but keeps everyone on their toes with—you guessed it—more water.

Guests will love the new Water Theater and the latest production of Water Magic’s “Imagination Rhapsody”—a musical cacophony of water jets and swaying water spouts that will entertain all.  Guests will even be able to orchestrate their own water symphonies, but they shouldn’t be surprised if the wrong note sends a wave of water their way.  In the Deep-Sea Exhibition area, guests will experience a dive to the ocean floor, where they can explore the depths and its creatures.  Another experience designed to mesmerize guests will be the famous Bubble Room, where there’s a lot more to bubbles than anyone thought they knew.

Like a water-powered funhouse on steroids, Water Magic is where guests can opt for complete and total immersion.  Our motto is “Get Me Wet.”  Our objective throughout the attraction is to entertain with a splash of “edutainment.”  And not to worry; body dryers flank each gallery to blow-dry any wetness.

“I got into the water in the 1980s with Titanic,” Joslyn joked, “and for the past 25 years I haven’t been able to get out.  I don’t know what I’ll do next – but chances are it will involve water.”

The most unique aspect of Water Magic’s basic equation is that almost every entertainment element—from concept to creation—will have sprung from the minds of Westgate’s design team.  Therefore, Westgate Entertainment will have proprietary control of all intellectual property, and may recycle and apply it to future attractions.  This will help Westgate create a powerful brand that preserves the unique qualities of Water Magic and other future attraction venues.

Well over 135,000 “passengers” have boarded the new Titanic Museum Attraction in just seven weeks

Posted by – June 9, 2010

Knoxville, Tenn. – The new Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. has been open for just two months and already more than 135,000 “passengers” have toured the painstakingly authentic recreation of the world’s most famous ship.

Titanic Museum Attraction in Tennessee

The world’s largest Titanic Museum Attraction, which is also the newest major attraction in the popular resort area surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is exceeding its business projections in all areas and sells completely out of tickets on most days. Because of the overwhelming response to the new museum, visitors are being urged to purchase tickets in advance or to make reservations by phone.

“I came down from Ohio specifically for the Titanic Museum Attraction,” said Amy Polczynski.  “I fully expected it to be amazing – but it far exceeded all of my expectations.  From the costumed crew members who meet you outside to the exact recreations of the grand staircase and first class suite, everything is so authentic.  It literally makes you feel as though you are standing on board the Titanic.

“In addition to the interior and exterior of the museum, the hundreds of actual Titanic artifacts that are on display are simply breathtaking.  To stand there and look at the actual master key that opened all of the first class suites, and the handwritten letters from those on board the ship, it just transports you back to 1912 – you feel like you are literally there.”

The Titanic Museum Attraction opened in April with a star-studded weekend-long Grand Opening hosted by Regis Philbin.  The event also featured numerous descendants and family members of those on board the Titanic and included a christening of the ship by Captain Edward J. Smith.

Titanic Museum Attraction is a half-scale, permanent, three-deck recreation of the Titanic.  The museum houses 20 galleries to display nearly 400 authentic, priceless Titanic artifacts that were either carried from the ship and into lifeboats by passengers and crew, or were found afloat soon after the sinking and quickly salvaged by rescue boats.

The Isidor and Ida Straus Suite at Titanic Museum Attraction

Inside the Titanic Museum Attraction, visitors find full-size recreations (built to actual Titanic blueprints) of Third-Class quarters, a First-Class suite, dining rooms and – the museum’s centerpiece – a $1 million exact reproduction of the Titanic’s Grand Staircase.  The First-Class suite in the Titanic Museum Attraction, which is dedicated to Isidor and Ida Straus who co-owned Macy’s Department Stores, was also the cabin used in James Cameron’s blockbuster movie Titanic as Rose’s suite.

“What we have created is special in so many ways,” said John Joslyn, co-owner of the Titanic Museum Attraction.  “It is truly a museum – with hundreds of priceless artifacts from the Titanic, but it is also an overall experience for our guests.  They get to talk to crew members and maids who know the detailed story of the ship and her passengers.  Visitors are able to touch an iceberg and feel the 28-degree water exactly as it was on that fateful night.

“While you’re visiting the Titanic Museum Attraction, you truly become a passenger on board the Titanic.  It’s a complete experience that honors and respects the ship and its passengers by keeping their stories alive.  It’s a one-of-a-kind place that you have to experience to fully understand.”

In addition to being a world class museum in the truest sense of the word, Titanic Museum Attraction is also highly interactive and offers a hands-on experience for children, teenagers and adults.  The ship is anchored in water to create the illusion of Titanic at sea, and a two-hour self-guided tour gives guests the sensation of sailing on the original ship’s 1912 maiden voyage. Upon entry, each guest receives a boarding pass bearing the name of an actual Titanic passenger or crew member whose fate is revealed on the Memorial Wall at tour end. Along the way, powerful emotions surface as guests:

  • Walk Titanic’s Grand Staircase
  • Touch the frozen surface of an “iceberg”
  • Feel the chill of that fateful “Starry Night”
  • Study some of the largest, most detailed Titanic models ever built
  • Grip the ship’s wheel and follow the Captain’s commands
  • Tour world-class galleries and the rare historical artifacts they hold
  • Sit in a Titanic lifeboat and listen to actual survivors tell their stories
  • Send an SOS from the Marconi Wireless Room
  • Test their balance while standing on mini-decks built to show the ever-steeper slope of Titanic as she sank
  • Watch children eight years and younger explore the special interactive Tot-Titanic Play-and-Learn Room
  • Dive to Titanic’s wreck site via spectacular underwater camera footage

The Titanic Museum Attraction – which is conveniently located to all areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville – is now open every day from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. ET.  Tickets are available online at www.TitanicPigeonForge.com and visitors are strongly urged to purchase tickets in advance or make reservations by calling 1-800-381-7670.

Cedar Bay Entertainment, which owns and operates Titanic Museum Attraction, is a privately owned entertainment and development company headquartered in Branson, Missouri, the site of Cedar Bay’s first Titanic Museum Attraction. Since its April 2006 grand opening, it has welcomed more than 2,200,000 guests.
