Internationally-recognized magician Terry Evanswood makes new, permanent home at WonderWorks

Posted by – April 27, 2010

Pigeon Forge, Tenn. – The movies have the “Oscar” and magic has the “Merlin.”  Both are highly sought-after awards given only to the most outstanding performers and artists.  WonderWorks in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. is now the permanent home to Terry Evanswood, one of a very select group of magicians to ever earn a Merlin.  Harry Blackstone, Doug Henning, Siegfried & Roy, and David Copperfield are a few of the past Merlin winners.

In addition to Evanswood’s daily performances of “Wonders of Magic” at WonderWorks, a new museum called the “Hall of Magic” just opened inside WonderWorks showcasing some of magic’s most treasured artifacts from legendary magicians like Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston and Harry Blackstone.  A huge collection of priceless props, costumes, autographs, mechanical toys, memorabilia and antique magic sets are now on display in the free Hall of Magic museum.

Over the years, Evanswood has thrilled audiences with his performances throughout the world, with some of his biggest fans being other famous magicians.  Now that Evanswood has found a home at the popular WonderWorks attraction in Pigeon Forge, he is within a one-day drive of most major cities in the Eastern U.S. and a must-see for visitors to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

“When I begin my show,” Evanswood said, “I look out and see an audience full of children, parents and grandparents. By the time I am half-way through my performance, I look out on each and every face and I see an entire audience of kids.  The look of complete awe and wonderment on their faces turns every single person in the room into a child.  That’s the most impressive magic trick I can ever hope to perform.”

Evanswood, who knew he wanted to be a magician since he was 9 years old, has performed in front of well over a million people (including being invited twice to perform at the White House in Washington, D.C.).  Along with his cast – Brittany McElroy. Natasha Volvacheva, Linda Black and Mike Phillips –  Evanswood continues to thrill huge crowds daily at WonderWorks with magic, illusions, sleight-of-hand, Houdini-style escapes and a dose of comedy.

WonderWorks, is an indoor theme park that opened in 2006 and has nearly 60,000 square feet of fun for all ages. WonderWorks is housed in an upside down building (you have to see it to be believe it).  The building appears to have been ripped from its foundation and set back down on its roof.

Inside WonderWorks, guests will find 120 interactive adventures that include the “Challenge Zone” with a rock wall climbing, physical and psychological endurance competitions and even a “bed of nails” to lie on.  In the “Space Zone,” visitors are entertained with interactive, 3-D films about outer space plus life-size recreations of space suits they can try on for size, a Mercury Space Capsule, and simulators that allow guests to land the Discovery Space Shuttle as it glides in from outer space.

WonderWorks also houses a “Sound and Light Zone,” a “Natural Disaster Zone” (where guests can experience a 5.3 earthquake), and the “Control Center” where visitors create roller coasters on computers and then get to ride the roller coaster they created in a coaster simulator.  WonderWorks also features the WonderDog Café where guests can enjoy the world-famous WonderDog with its secret recipe chili sauce without ever leaving the attraction.

Every evening, WonderWorks comes to life with the “Hoot N’Holler” dinner show – one of the most popular shows in the Great Smoky Mountains.  For years, visitors have enjoyed a fantastic three-course dinner with their family while experiencing the 90-minute performance featuring “Scraps,” whose antics leave guests rolling in the aisles with laughter.  Kids are always FREE at the Hoot N’ Holler diner show with a paying adult.

ValueVacation tickets to WonderWorks are available in a variety of packages that meet the needs of any size family.  To learn more about WonderWorks, the Hoot N’Holler dinner show and the new Wonders of Magic show featuring Terry Evanswood, visit www.WonderWorksTN.com or call 865-868-1800.

WonderWorks operates from 9 a.m. to midnight every day.  We also operate in Orlando, Fla. and will open soon in Panama City, Fla. and Myrtle Beach, S.C.

East Tennessee Medical Group focuses on commitment to recycle

Posted by – March 17, 2010

Alcoa, Tenn. (March 17, 2010) – Imagine 53 dump trucks, containing paper, cardboard and aluminum, parked end-to-end across East Tennessee Medical Group’s parking lot, 266 Joule Street.

The contents of those 53 trucks are the equivalent of the materials ETMG shredded and recycled in 2009.

Since its beginning, the ETMG recycling program has been a rousing success. According to Rocky Davis, ETMG’s Director of Facilities and Safety, results for 2009 show ETMG recycled 31.4 tons of recyclable paper, which is equivalent to 6.3 million sheets of paper and saves:

  • A forest of 534 trees
  • 219,660 gallons of water
  • 12,552 kilowatts of energy
  • 2,824 cubic feet of landfill space
  • 33,138 gallons of gasoline

In addition, ETMG recycled 409 cubic yards of cardboard and 7,020 gallons of aluminum and #2 plastic.

Ron German, CEO of ETMG, said the practice’s employees have solidly embraced the act of processing used materials to create new products. The physician group uses Smith and Hammaker and SPECTRA to assist in its recycling goals.

“We’re committed to making our region a better place. A successful recycling program is one way we can give back to the community,” he said. “Our enthusiasm is high to surpass last year’s numbers and become ‘greener’ as 2010 progresses.”

East Tennessee Medical Group Dedicates New Home for Blount County Family

Posted by – September 4, 2009

ETMG builds home photoAlcoa, Tenn.— More than 135 East Tennessee Medical Group (ETMG) volunteers are nearing the end of their Blount County Habitat for Humanity house construction, as they dedicate a new home for the Mark Roach family at 9 a.m. Sat. Sept. 12, in the new Norwood Village subdivision, Maryville, Tenn.

The project is part of ETMG’s 15th anniversary celebration and “Community Centered” effort in Blount County.   ETMG staff gave up last year’s Christmas gathering and this year’s annual employee appreciation picnic to use those monies (with additional physician funding) to pay for the building expenses.  Every weekend this summer, employees and physicians were swinging hammers, climbing on roofs, and wielding paintbrushes to actually build the Roach’s new home.

“It’s been an honor for East Tennessee Medical Group to serve Blount County for 15 years,” said Ron German, CEO of ETMG. “The Habitat for Humanity house is a great opportunity for us to give back to our community, while thanking the citizens of Blount County for supporting our medical practice.”  This is ETMG’s first year to sponsor a home for Blount County Habitat for Humanity.

Tony Gibbons, Blount County Habitat for Humanity’s executive director, said the non-profit organization is thankful for ETMG’s help. “It has been fortunate for us and the families of Habitat for Humanity to work with such a dedicated group of people. It speaks to the character of ETMG’s employees when they give up their time and seasonal get-togethers to help us out.”

During the construction, which began June 6, the multi-specialty physicians’ practice received some unexpected help from several Blount community groups and businesses, including Fairview United Methodist Church, Louisville Christian Church, Hickory Construction, Tipton & Tipton Roofing Company, and even several patients who heard what ETMG was doing.

Rocky Davis, ETMG facilities director and coordinator for the Habitat build, said he was amazed “how many of our neighbors really want to take the time to make a difference. They helped us put on shingles, build porches and install the house’s siding.  It’s no wonder we start each construction day with a group prayer.  This project has turned out to be as much a blessing for ETMG as it has been for our partner family. ”

German said he is optimistic about future collaboration with local groups on other community service projects. “We’ll further this tradition of giving back by continuing to work with organizations like Blount Habitat for Humanity to make the community a better place to live.”

During Saturday’s dedication, the Roaches will be given their house keys, gifts from local merchants and the house will be blessed by a local pastor.

Celebrating 15 years of care to the Blount County community, East Tennessee Medical Group, 266 Joule Street, Alcoa, is Blount County’s most comprehensive physicians’ organization, with more than  45 physicians and allied health professionals, supported by state of the art technology and staff.  ETMG also is the recipient of the 2008 TECHMED award for its use of innovative electronic medical records and patient care technology and received this year’s Daily Times Reader’ Choice Award as Blount County’s Best Healthcare Facility.   For more information, call 984-ETMG or visit its website at www.etmg.net.
