Nils Gaddis, D.O., Rejoins East Tennessee Medical Group

ALCOA, Tenn. – Nils Gaddis, D.O., will rejoin the internal medicine staff of East Tennessee Medical Group, 266 Joule St., Alcoa, Tenn, accepting new patients August 1.

Dr. Gaddis has been working as a hospitalist at Blount Memorial Hospital for ETMG for the last several years.  He received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. He completed his internship and residency at the Indiana University Department of Internal Medicine, Indianapolis, Ind.  At this same time Dr. Gaddis also served as the on-call physician at the Indiana University’s emergency room. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Ind.  He has been employed by ETMG since 2003.

Dr. Gaddis is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine.

Neal W. Atchley, M.D., Re-joins East Tennessee Medical Group

ALCOA, Tenn. – Board-certified family practice physician, Neal W. Atchley, M.D., will rejoin the primary care physician staff of East Tennessee Medical Group, 266 Joule St., Alcoa, Tenn, accepting new patients August 1.

Dr. Atchley earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, Tenn. He completed his family practice internship and his residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in Huntsville, Ala.  He is a member of the American Association of Family Practice.

East Tennessee Students win Alcoa Foundation Scholarships

KNOXVILLE, TENN.—Alcoa Tennessee Operations and the Alcoa Inc. Knoxville Office announced today that three high school seniors have been named Alcoa Foundation scholarship winners.

Carlos Garcia, son of Adrian and Raquel Garcia of Knoxville

Carlos Garcia, son of Adrian and Raquel Garcia of Knoxville, has been awarded a $6,000 scholarship from Alcoa Foundation. Garcia is a recent graduate of Farragut High School where he was a member of the National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta.  He was co-captain of the soccer team and was ranked fifth in his graduating class.  He plans to major in civil engineering at Texas A&M University beginning this fall.

Patrick Givens, son of Scott and Dodie Givens of Knoxville, has also been awarded a $6,000 scholarship from Alcoa Foundation. Givens graduated from Bearden High School where he was an AP Scholar.

A member of the National Honor Society and the Bearden High School Student Government, Givens was also a three year letterman on the Bearden golf team.  He will be attending Vanderbilt University, majoring in engineering.

In addition, Kimberley Owen, daughter of John and Linda Owen of Knoxville, has been awarded a $6,000 scholarship from Alcoa Foundation.  Owen graduated from Bearden High School where she was a National Merit Commended Scholar.  She was president of Mu Alpha Theta, as well as a member of Student Government Association, Key Club, French and National honor societies.  A first degree black belt, Owen will be attending Clemson University in the fall.  She plans to study chemical engineering.

These Alcoa Foundation scholarships are payable in four annual installments of $1,500 each.  These three students were awarded the scholarship based on academic achievement and potential, leadership ability, volunteerism/community service, and character, and were selected by a national panel of university professionals.

The award is part of Alcoa Foundation’s Sons and Daughters Scholarship Program which recognizes outstanding academic achievement by high school seniors.

During the 2011-2012 academic year, Alcoa Foundation will assist more than 180 students in the U.S. with their undergraduate college education.  These students represent 46 Alcoa locations in 18 states.

Since 1953, the Sons and Daughters Scholarship Program has recognized outstanding academic achievement by awarding more than $19 million in scholarships to more than 3,500 students.

Neurologist Darel Anthony Butler Joins East Tennessee Medical Group

ALCOA, Tenn. – Board certified neurologist Darel Anthony Butler, M.D., Darel Anthony Butler, Neurologist at East Tennessee Medical Groupjoins the staff of East Tennessee Medical Group, 266 Joule St., Alcoa, Tenn., in September.

Dr. Butler completed his neurology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, Calif., following an internship at the California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco. He received his medical degree from the University of California, School of Medicine, San Francisco, and his bachelor’s degree in biology cum laude from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

Prior to his arrival at ETMG, Butler owned Butler Neurology, Memphis, Tenn. He also worked at Wesley Neurology Clinic, Memphis and was clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, Memphis. Although Dr. Butler has practiced 14 years in Tenn., he has spent many years studying and teaching in California. He also has presented clinical research findings at international presentations in Paris, France, and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Butler’s past community involvement includes work with local Alzheimer’s Association events, inner city crisis shelter counseling, and founding the We CARE! Alzheimer’s Clinic in Memphis. He has received many awards for medical and community service, including the Resolution Honor Award for Alzheimer Treatment and Research presented by the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, the Living Legend Award by the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators, and the “Promising Future” award by the California State Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association of the Mid-South and was a trustee at LeMoyne-Owen College, Memphis. He is also a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Medical Association, and the National Medical Association.

Internal Medicine Duo Joins East Tennessee Medical Group

ALCOA, Tenn. –Husband and wife duo Aaron Smyth, D.O., and Kathrine Smyth, M.D., both internal medicine physicians, have joined the staff of East Tennessee Medical Group, 266 Joule St., Alcoa, Tenn. They currently are accepting patients.
With a clinical interest in geriatrics and preventative medicine, Dr. Aaron Smyth completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, following his medical degree from Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine, Pikeville, Ky. He received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Dr. Kathrine Smyth, who specializes in women’s health and preventative medicine, completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, after receiving her medical degree from East Tennessee State University College of Medicine, Johnson City, Tenn. She received her bachelor’s degree in microbiology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The Smyths are members of the American College of Physicians and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.

Area non-profits receive donations from Alcoa Inc.

Alcoa, Tenn. – Seven local charities are the beneficiaries of Alcoa Inc. employees’ good ideas.  During a recent luncheon to recognize innovative and “above and beyond” projects of Tennessee Operations’ employees, a total of $7,000 or $1,000 each , was presented to representatives from:

  • American Red Cross, Blount County – disaster relief fund
  • Angelic Ministries – food and clothing for the needy
  • Blount County Humane Society – animal shelter/foster program
  • Lost Sheep Ministry – food and clothing for the homeless
  • The Love Kitchen – food for the homeless and homebound
  • Muscular Dystrophy Association – Research
  • RIO Revolution – Helping Hands ministry

“We appreciate Alcoa and all they do in our community,” said Chris Davis, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Blount County Chapter.  “We are able to do what we do with the help from companies like Alcoa stepping up and lending a hand, especially during times of disasters like the floods in Nashville.”

 The donations were made possible through Tennessee Operations’ suggestion system. Employees are encouraged to make suggestions on how to improve certain areas of business operation within the plant.   With every suggestion, Alcoa contributes $5 to the “community chest.”

“By making suggestions for improvements, our employees are not only helping to improve our reliability and the long term viability of this facility, they are making a difference in our community,” said Chris Jackson, Alcoa Tennessee Operations Location Manager.

Local organizations were nominated and selected for funding by Alcoa employees.
