According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu season typically peaks during January and February, but it often begins as early as October. The CDC reports that the 2011-2012 flu vaccines protect against the three strains of the flu virus expected to be most common this year (including the H1N1 virus that caused a pandemic in 2009).  The CDC suggests the flu vaccine for people considered at high risk of serious flu complications, such as: pregnant women, young children, those with chronic health conditions and people 65 years and older.

Nils Gaddis, D.O.

Dr. Gaddis has been working as a hospitalist at Blount Memorial Hospital for ETMG for the last several years.  He received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. He completed his internship and residency at the Indiana University Department of Internal Medicine, Indianapolis, Ind.  At this same time Dr. Gaddis also served as the on-call physician at the Indiana University’s emergency room. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Ind.  He has been employed by ETMG since 2003.

Dr. Butler completed his neurology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, Calif., following an internship at the California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco. He received his medical degree from the University of California, School of Medicine, San Francisco, and his bachelor’s degree in biology cum laude from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

Prior to his arrival at ETMG, Butler owned Butler Neurology, Memphis, Tenn. He also worked at Wesley Neurology Clinic, Memphis and was clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, Memphis. Although Dr. Butler has practiced 14 years in Tenn., he has spent many years studying and teaching in California. He also has presented clinical research findings at international presentations in Paris, France, and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Butler’s past community involvement includes work with local Alzheimer’s Association events, inner city crisis shelter counseling, and founding the We CARE! Alzheimer’s Clinic in Memphis. He has received many awards for medical and community service, including the Resolution Honor Award for Alzheimer Treatment and Research presented by the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, the Living Legend Award by the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators, and the “Promising Future” award by the California State Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association of the Mid-South and was a trustee at LeMoyne-Owen College, Memphis. He is also a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Medical Association, and the National Medical Association.

Lisa Marie Bowling, M.D.

ALCOA, Tenn. –Board Certified family practice physician Lisa Marie Bowling, M.D., will join the staff of East Tennessee Medical Group, 266 Joule St., Alcoa, Tenn. She begins accepting patients July 19.

She comes to Alcoa from Birmingham, Ala., where she previously practiced at ACIPCO Medical Group. She completed her residency and internship with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. where she also received her medical degree. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and biochemistry summa cum laude from Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.

Dr. Bowling also previously served as a faculty physician/assistant professor at Baptist Memorial Hospital at Tipton, in Covington, Tenn., and has given community presentations on diabetes management, heart health and weight management. The contents of those 53 trucks are the equivalent of the materials ETMG shredded and recycled in 2009.

Since its beginning, the ETMG recycling program has been a rousing success. According to Rocky Davis, ETMG’s Director of Facilities and Safety, results for 2009 show ETMG recycled 31.4 tons of recyclable paper, which is equivalent to 6.3 million sheets of paper and saves:

• A forest of 534 trees
• 219,660 gallons of water
• 12,552 kilowatts of energy
• 2,824 cubic feet of landfill space
• 33,138 gallons of gasoline

In addition, ETMG recycled 409 cubic yards of cardboard and 7,020 gallons of aluminum and #2 plastic.

Ron German, CEO of ETMG, said the practice’s employees have solidly embraced the act of processing used materials to create new products. The physician group uses Smith and Hammaker and SPECTRA to assist in its recycling goals.
