Leaves really expected to “pop” with color this fall at Biltmore

Posted by – August 23, 2012

Asheville, N.C. – After the warmest 12-month period ever recorded in U.S. history since modern record-keeping began in 1895, we’re all ready for a big cool down… and Biltmore’s a great place to experience the changes of the season.

When Biltmore’s trees shift from summertime deep greens to hues of yellow, bronze and red, the air grows crisper and temperatures dip. And from what we’ve seen this year in terms of rainfall, 2012 should not disappoint leaf peepers who love a colorful show, says Parker Andes, Biltmore’s director of horticulture.

“We’ve had plenty of moisture through mid-summer. That means healthy trees,” says Andes.

Biltmore’s Walled Garden transitions from a riot of tropical plants to chrysanthemums in rich jewel tones, laid out in symmetrical patterns. The estate’s forests become a tapestry of ruby, amber, gold and amethyst.

Starting in mid-September, Biltmore website visitors can check for weekly updates from Andes on how things are coloring up on the estate at www.biltmore.com.

Forbes.com article features Ackermann PR client

Posted by – June 22, 2012

KNOXVILLE Biltmore, an Ackermann PR client, was highlighted in a June 18 article written by Forbes.com’s Marianne Bickle.  Bickle, who had recently traveled to Biltmore Estate on business took time while there to “people watch” and examine consumers’ shopping patterns and how they interact with each other.

Bickle describes Biltmore as a “wonder” and said, “to see the Estate is to be humbled and amazed.”  What Bickle was most amazed by was the effect Biltmore had on its visitors, especially families.  According to Bickle, teenagers were “engaged in conversations with their parents.”  “I didn’t see anyone texting, swaying to music with earphones glued to their head or people complaining that they were bored.  Instead, I watched as families talked with one another,” says Bickle.

According to Bickle, Biltmore is a popular vacation destination spot because it has interests appealing to each member of the family.  From touring the home to kayaking, shopping and even touring the trails on a Segway, Bickle explains Biltmore has something for everyone.

Additionally, Bickle highlights The Vanderbilts: At Home and Abroad, Antler Hill Village’s current exhibition documenting George and Edith Vanderbilt’s lifestyle both home and abroad.  As part of this exhibit, artifacts from the Titanic are on display, some on loan from the Titanic Museum Attraction, another Ackermann PR client.  The Vanderbilt’s were originally scheduled to sail on the Titanic, but at the last minute changed their plans to sail on another ship leaving their valet Edwin Wheeler onboard the ship’s ill-fated voyage.  The exhibition shows a unique connection between Biltmore and the Titanic.

Celebrate summer in Biltmore’s ginormous backyard. Kids admitted free all summer to roam 8,000 acres!

Posted by – May 17, 2012

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Big kids, little kids – doesn’t matter:  Who doesn’t love an 8,000-acre backyard?

Biltmore brings it with miles of rolling hills, stunning mountain views, babbling streams, farm yards and even live music by big-name performers on starry summer nights. Not to mention the 250-room Biltmore House, George Vanderbilt’s dream home that he lived in more than 100 years ago.

Biltmore’s slate of outdoor activities and tours guarantees to keep adventurous families on the go. And with kids 16 and younger admitted free all summer, (and free for dads on Father’s Day, June 17), the prospect of stomping around on the grounds of America’s Largest Home is a winner.

Seeing the estate on foot will certainly satisfy curiosities, but taking it in from a bike, on the back of a horse, while floating down a lazy river, or even on a Segway boosts the experience to a new level. Or, try your luck at fly fishing, sporting clays and behind the wheel of a Land Rover (our Land Rover school offers courses for adults AND kids!).

For a more relaxed pace, Biltmore’s summer gardens offer many picnicking spots near tropical palms, thousands of roses, giant sunflowers and colorful lily pads and koi in the Italian Garden pools.

Summer nights heat up with the 16th annual Biltmore Concert Series when it kicks off Aug. 9. The diverse line-up includes the Steve Miller Band; Peter Frampton; Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas; Foreigner; KC and the Sunshine Band and more.

And new this year for history buffs: “The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad.” This exhibition divulges details and tidbits about the Vanderbilt family and the lives they led in residence at Biltmore House and on their world travels. Objects from the family’s personal archives are on display – some for the first time – and help tell the story of their lives on the estate.

Extend your visit with an overnight stay at the Inn on Biltmore Estate and take advantage of special deals, including our Three Nights for the Price of Two offer on select dates this summer.

Detailed information on Biltmore’s special summer offerings can be found at www.biltmore.com.
