Maryville, TNClayton Homes announced today is has been awarded LEED certification, established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.  LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green building. President and CEO of Clayton Homes, Kevin Clayton says, “We are very honored to have received this certification, but even more excited about reducing our impact on the environment.  That’s something our team members here at Clayton Homes can be proud of when they come to work every day.”

Today’s certification makes Clayton Homes only the 4th LEED-certified building in the state of Tennessee, and the 14th in the Southeast.  Clayton Homes achieved LEED certification for its existing headquarters by maximizing operational efficiency, while minimizing environmental impacts.  “We use LEED standards as a road map to sustainability.” says Jason Langston, Clayton Homes’ LEED project coordinator.  “Some great examples include our onsite restaurant offering healthy choices called “The Greenway” as well as other environmental and healthy amenities. The result: team member do not have to leave the facility resulting in less environmental impact and healthier people.”

“Clayton Homes’ LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” says Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair of USGBC.

Fedrizzi is pleased the Berkshire-Hathaway company is sharing some of its best practices in its Home Building Facilities and Model Home Centers around the country.  “Sustainability is something we’ve been interested in for years now, and we are using some of these same principals in the homes that we build for our customers,” says Clayton.  Clayton Homes is the nation’s largest home builder, with more than 1.5 million homes built.

Clayton-i House 4

The Clayton i-house

Earlier this year, Clayton Homes unveiled the Energy Star™ rated i-house, featuring solar panels, a rain water catchment system, high-end “low e” windows, a tankless water heater, low-flow faucets, and easily renewable bamboo flooring.  Clayton Homes was also recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Systems Building Research Alliance and the Manufactured Housing Institute with five 2009 ENERGY STAR® Leadership in Housing Awards.

Clayton Homes is in good company with other LEED-ED Certified headquarters around the country, including McDonald’s World Headquarters in Illinois, Starbucks Center in Washington and the MGM Tower in California.  “The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” says Fedrizzi.

LEED certification of Clayton Homes was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community.  These features include:

  • Achieved 50% in water savings
  • Achieved overall 33% in real energy savings
  • Recycling 53% of waste stream.
  • Purchasing 60% of materials that include at least 10% post consumer content a sustainable and economical practice
  • Optimizing the building indoor air quality, through measuring and balancing outside air intake
  • Establishing metrics for the impact that our on-site GreenWay restaurant, exercise facility, outdoor amenities and GreenWay-to-Go programs have had on the reduction of carbon emissions from the availability of these enhancements
  • Offering recycling containers for TM’s to bring in their home recyclables.  We have established metrics that account reductions in carbon emissions by offering this benefit
  • Changing to eco-safe cleaning materials and cleaning equipment
  • Produced a complete operations manual (S.O.P.) based on our existing culture of being proactive in all building systems
  • Developed plan for complete site erosion and sedimentation control and complete site maintenance.  202 acres are currently under the GreenBelt Tax designation with 60 acres designated for hay

According to the USGBC, an initial sampling of other LEED-EB certified buildings found that an average return on investment is 2.6 years and annual net savings totaling more than $170,000.  “While the ROI is meaningful, the real reward is in making a difference; no matter how big or small the changes, the more we can make a positive impact on our planet, the better,” says Clayton.

MARYVILLE, TN – Casual-dining restaurant leader Ruby Tuesday, Inc. has announced new international franchise agreements for the development of its flagship brand in the Middle East and the United Kingdom. The company has also granted franchise rights for Wok Hay, an Asian-focused casual dining concept, in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Chile.

“Ruby Tuesday’s international growth continues at a steady and reliable pace,” said Mark Ingram, President of Global PartnerShips, the company that manages Ruby Tuesday’s international and domestic franchise development. “We are excited to add new development territories to an existing franchise, sign an agreement for the first Ruby Tuesday in the U.K., and launch international franchising for Wok Hay. This growth proves there continues to be a high level of confidence in the brand and its performance,” he added.

Development rights for three new Ruby Tuesdays in the eastern territories of Saudi Arabia have been granted to an affiliate of Daliya Al-Wataniya for General Trading and Contracting W.L.L., the current franchisee for the countries of Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, and Lebanon, and six additional restaurants will be developed in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi by Bin Hendi Hospitality, the franchisee that now has the rights to open 18 Ruby Tuesday restaurants in all seven Emirate nations over the next five years.

And for the first time in the company’s 37-year history, a Ruby Tuesday will open in the United Kingdom when development begins on the first phase of a franchise for Wales and Southwest England that will allow for five restaurant openings in four-and-a-half years.

Moving Picture Books help create and inspire young readers

Posted by – November 10, 2009

MPBlogoKnoxville, Tenn.  – These aren’t the children’s books you grew up with.  A new line of “books” engage young readers by combining classic children’s stories with viewing options that meet the demanding needs of today’s digital families.  Instead of pure entertainment and games, Moving Picture Books make reading fun for children.  The company’s new line of high-quality digital stories can be purchased as DVDs or downloaded directly to iPods, cell phones, computers and most mobile devices.  This feature is a hit with parents and grandparents who are always on the move.

Children spend an excessive amount of time in front of televisions, computers and video games.  A recent Nielsen Company study showed that children aged 2 -11 are watching more television than they have in years, with children 2-5 years of age spending more than 32 hours per week in front of a screen.  With Moving Picture Books, that time can be entertaining as well as a learning experience.

“Digital media offers a new technique for engaging children to read at an earlier stage of life,” said Dr. Robert Rider, Dean and Professor at the University of Tennessee’s College of Education.  “Using digital media and animated picture books helps to attract the attention of kids and helps them focus on fluency, literacy and vocabulary in a way that advances them to a much higher level of literacy.”

With educators and parents focused on the benefits of digital learning, the University of Tennessee has initiated a research study to examine the way children process information learned in the digital age.  As part of the study, children will be using Moving Picture Books as their learning is evaluated by education experts.

Sesame StreetEach of the 44 stories offered by Moving Picture Books – including eight new Sesame Street titles – can be viewed with English or Spanish voiceover, and with or without the read-along English text displayed on the screen.  The pacing of the storytelling is, according to Dr. Rider, perfect for children to follow along with the text.  The available stories include classics that have been passed down from generation to generation, new favorites written specifically for Moving Picture Books, Bible stories and holiday classics.

Meg Lonon, the Vice President and Development Director for Moving Picture Books and mother of two young children, said, “Parents can read along with their kids or download a story for them to enjoy while they navigate through their busy days.

Accessing these stories is easy and moms can take them along on car trips, to waiting rooms, grocery stores, sports practices or anywhere else they need to go.  Moving Picture Books are perfect for those who are just learning to read, those who read well and those who are struggling.”

Moving Picture Books are designed to engage and inspire young readers.  The read-along text versions of the books have been hailed by education professionals and parents as a great early reading tool.  In addition, all of the books feature age-appropriate lessons that all parents can appreciate like caring, sharing, honesty and self-reliance.  Lonon says, “Because they can be viewed on iPods and cell phones, they are a hit with children and parents everywhere you go.”

Moving Picture Books are available at Wal-Mart stores throughout the country, online at www.MovingPictureBooks.com and at online retailers including iTunes.

Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge launches national search for ship’s legendary commander

Posted by – November 10, 2009

LogoPigeon Forge, Tennessee –  He’s out there somewhere—a tall, distinguished  middle-aged gentleman with a nicely trimmed grey beard and a quiet flamboyance.  The search is on:  Titanic Pigeon Forge is looking for a special actor to fill the shoes of the legendary Captain Edward J. Smith.  This full-time position starts in March 2010.

Once finished, Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge will employ approximately 75 crew members and staff.

Captain Edward Smith

Captain Edward Smith

“Captain Smith will be the most important crew member at our new Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee,” said Titanic Museum owner John Joslyn.  “He’ll serve as the official greeter, will officiate in special Titanic events, and he’ll also help recreate the formal elegance and style that was Titanic.”  Joslyn, also president of Cedar Bay Entertainment, LLC, said the Captain Smith cast member is one of the most public faces of the Titanic Museum Attraction.

“It’s important for applicants to eventually have an extensive knowledge of both Titanic’s history and its legacy,” Joslyn said.  “We are committed to accuracy and recreating the environment on board the Titanic.  Captain Smith is a huge part of that experience for our guests.”

If you fit the bill, please mail your resume and a photo to Officer D. Brown, Cedar Bay Entertainment, LLC, 3027 W. 76 Country Blvd. – Suite G, Branson, MO 65616 or email them to CaptainSmith@TitanicPigeonForge.com

Captain Edward Smith on board the Titanic

With an April 2010 launch date, Titanic Pigeon Forge will be filling a number of exciting positions.  Casting decisions for Captain Smith and the ship’s regular crew members will begin the first of March.

Titanic Museum Attraction is a celebration of the ship, her passengers and crew.  Guests will get to know the passengers and crew in the galleries where over 400 priceless personal and private artifacts are on display. Each artifact has a unique story that relates directly to a passenger or crew member.

As guests enter the world of the Titanic, they will be given a passenger boarding ticket. On this ticket is the name of an actual Titanic passenger or crew member and the class they were traveling.  Guests will learn that individual’s story and, in the Titanic Memorial Room, they will find out the fate of their ticketed passenger.

During the approximately 90-minute self-guided tour, guests say they experience powerful emotions as they:

  • View hundreds of artifacts
  • Learn about the Titanic’s maiden voyage and the personal stories of its passengers
  • Walk the Grand Staircase
  • Touch the frozen surface of an “iceberg”
  • Listen to survivors’ stories as they sit in actual lifeboats
  • Feel the chill of that fateful “Starry Night”
  • Stand on the mighty ship’s bridge and hear the Captain’s commands
  • View life onboard, see a First Class Stateroom and a Third Class cabin
  • Explore world-class gallery rooms with rare historical artifacts
  • Try to send an SOS signal from the ship’s wireless communications room
  • View an exclusive exhibit of the only known interior and exterior Titanic photos
  • Visitors to the new Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge can expect to see Titanic in a whole new light. Unlike traveling exhibits, Titanic in the Smokies is a permanent three-story, $25 million museum attraction shaped like Titanic herself.  The signature building will be built half-scale to the original Titanic and towers 100 feet above the Parkway.  The structure is anchored in water to create the illusion of the Titanic at sea.  Construction photos are updated weekly at www.TitanicPigeonForge.com.

Cedar Bay Entertainment, LLC, is a privately owned entertainment and development company headquartered in Branson, Missouri, also home to Cedar Bay’s first Titanic Museum Attraction, which has welcomed more than 1.6 million guests since its April 2006 grand opening.  For more information about Captain Smith or the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, visit www.TitanicPigeonForge.com.

A free Titanic Museum preview center is now open daily at 2134 Parkway in Pigeon Forge.

Ruby Tuesday Unveils Fresh Tastes on New Menu

Posted by – November 9, 2009

RT_Unstacked_Red&Black.187CMaryville, TN  – When it comes to offering new choices and tantalizing flavors, Ruby Tuesday is once again emerging as a trendsetter. This month, the popular casual dining restaurant chain debuts a new menu, with more than 27 brand new items, including an expanded selection of quesadillas, entrée salads, and lobster entrées, as well as classic favorites like Ruby Minis, handcrafted burgers and fork-tender ribs. The company says its new menu is a reflection of the changing preferences of Ruby Tuesday’s customers and clearly displays its commitment to quality, freshness, variety, and value. Sandy Beall, the founder and CEO of Ruby Tuesday, says “We’re excited about the new bold flavors on this menu and believe our guests will love them as much as they love their old favorites.”

One of the biggest changes to Ruby Tuesday’s menu is the wide variety of seafood entrees. Among the more than 14 premium seafood selections, one of the most popular items has been the New Orleans Seafood. “We are proud to offer flavorful dishes, prepared to the highest standards,” says Peter Glander, Ruby Tuesday’s executive chef. Glander says he expects guests will be drawn to new additions to the menu, like Salmon Florentine and Lobster Carbonara, as well as the value-priced Steak and Lobster entrée. “What sets Ruby Tuesday apart is the quality of our seafood,” says Glander. “For example, we only use North Atlantic lobster tails and premium jumbo lump crab meat.”

New Orleans Lobster Cutout“Ruby Tuesday has made it a priority to use fresh ingredients in a variety of dishes, like our fresh, never-frozen burgers and all-natural fresh chicken, all offered at great value,” says Kimberly Grant, Ruby Tuesday’s Executive Vice President. She points out that Ruby Tuesday is also one of the world’s largest buyers of jumbo lump crab meat. “Our guests are able to enjoy a premium crab cake entrée at an affordable price.”

One of the longest running values at Ruby Tuesday has been its Fresh Garden Bar, a signature since the founding of the brand. It remains on the new menu, but for people who want a salad as their entrée, there are now more choices. The fresh, new offerings include the Asian Salmon Spinach Salad, Sante Fe Chicken Salad, Avocado Shrimp Salad, and the Southwestern Beef Salad.

Beall says the company has been passionate about great food and gracious hospitality since he founded Ruby Tuesday in 1972. “Our commitment to freshness and quality has remained constant. The new menu has evolved through the years and is clearly a departure from the not-always-fresh food still common at typical bar and grill restaurants.”

All of the new menu changes are a continuation of Ruby Tuesday’s “Fresh Taste, Fresh Place” brand transformation. In 2007, the company rolled out a remodeling program nationwide that transformed the interior and exterior of the restaurant buildings. “Our updated look, feel, and menu offerings are all important parts of our determination to consistently provide a high-quality, casual dining experience that our guests will enjoy and remember,” says Beall.

The new menu is now available in all of the restaurants across the U.S., and a complete list of items is available online at www.RubyTuesday.com.

Economic Boost: Clayton Believes Extending Home Buying Tax Credit Will Help Economy

Posted by – November 9, 2009

Clayton Homes Logo

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The President/CEO of America’s largest homebuilder said today that extending and expanding the tax credit for homebuyers has the potential to help businesses across the nation.

“Building homes helps build a growing economy,” said Kevin Clayton, President and CEO. “The tax credit will further stimulate demand and encourage many people that may have been uncertain, to take the step and buy a home now. There couldn’t be a better time to buy; rates are low, prices are very competitive and now the tax credit has been extended AND expanded. It’s perfect.”

The tax credit first put in place earlier this year was set to expire at the end of this month. On Thursday, Congress voted to not only extend the $8,000 first time buyer tax credit, but also to expand the offer to include a $6,500 credit for many who already own a home and are now ready for their next home. President Obama then signed the bill into law, meaning the tax credits will be in place on homes purchased through at least April 30, 2010.

“Clayton Homes will do all we can with every program to help people become homeowners.” said Clayton. “It is an opportunity that will not be available again and buyers must demand the most for their money, while looking for the best value.”

Clayton Homes has offered a variety of incentives in addition to the tax credit to help people make the decision to buy. Clayton said the firm is already looking at extending such offers or creating new ones now that the tax credits will remain in place.

“This is perfect for the homebuyer. And we’ll do everything we can to get more people into homes, keep our 12,000 employees working hard and do our part in helping the economy recover,” said Clayton.

Clayton, a Berkshire-Hathaway company, has built more than a million homes since 1934. More information is available at www.claytonhomes.com.

About Clayton Homes:  A Berkshire-Hathaway Company, Clayton Homes is a national, vertically integrated housing company. Through its family of brands, Clayton Homes builds, sells, finances, leases, and insures a full spectrum of affordable housing and is the nation’s number one retailer of modular and manufactured homes.

Walmart Donates $85,000 Refrigerator Food Truck to Second Harvest East Tennessee

Posted by – November 6, 2009

Knoxville, Tenn. – As Walmart and the Walmart Foundation continueLogo “Walmart Gives Back,” a holiday giving initiative that will provide $32 million in monetary and in-kind donations to charitable organizations across the U.S., a refrigerator truck donated by the Walmart Foundation will arrive at Second Harvest East Tennessee today to help feed Knoxville families in need. The truck is one of 35 that departed from Madison, Wis., earlier this month headed to Feeding America food banks in local communities across the country.

In addition to the donated truck, Walmart presented Second Harvest East Tennessee with a $40,000 donation from the company’s state giving program, to help feed families in need this fall.

Valued at $85,000, the new truck and 12 pallets of Great Value-branded products and fresh apples will arrive in Knoxville in time for Thanksgiving. Feeding America estimates the new trucks will help Second Harvest East Tennessee and 34 additional food banks to transport up 52.5 million pounds of food, the equivalent to 41 million additional meals, per year.

“In this economy, families and seniors across the country who rely on food banks have been hit especially hard,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “As Walmart stores continue to be the price leader on groceries, our partnership with Feeding America is helping us do our part to put more food on the dinner table. Our business and our charitable giving are united in the commitment to eradicate hunger in America.”

“We are so excited to celebrate Walmart’s generosity today, as it continues to help those in need throughout our community,” said Elaine Streno, executive director or Second Harvest East Tennessee. “Walmart has been a strong community partner, and has supported our organization with food donations, monetary donations, and now with the donation of a refrigerator truck, which will enable us to bring fresh, healthy food to those who desperately need it.”

Walmart’s donated food trucks are in response to a call from food banks that were unable to safely transport nutritious produce, deli meat, beef, chicken, dairy and other groceries. Since last November, Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations have donated more than 90 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 70 million meals – to Feeding America food banks, exceeding the company’s goal and making Walmart Feeding America’s largest food donor.

As in years past, the majority of Walmart’s holiday giving will happen at the local level with more than $24 million donated from the Walmart Foundation to nonprofits in the communities where Walmart’s 4,000 stores and clubs are located. In addition, the Walmart Foundation will, once again, donate $1.25 million to The Salvation Army, and Red Kettles will raise funds at Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations nationwide from Friday, Nov. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 24.

Later this holiday season, Walmart will announce additional recipients of its Walmart Gives Back holiday giving. For more information, visit www.walmartgiving.com.

About Philanthropy at Walmart

Through its philanthropic programs and partnerships, the Walmart Foundation funds initiatives focused on creating opportunities in education, work force development, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness. From February 1, 2008, through January 31, 2009, Walmart – and its domestic and international foundations – gave more than $423 million in cash and in-kind gifts globally. Knoxville Tennis Team from Fort Sanders wins USTA National Championship

Posted by – November 6, 2009

Knoxville, Tenn. – The women’s adult tennis team from Fort Sanders in Knoxville brought home the United States Tennis Association (USTA) team national championship.  In a classic nail-biter, Anne Cherney’s 3.0 women’s team defeated Montana for the title in Tucson, Ariz. after some early setbacks.

USTA“It was fantastic,” Cherney said.  “It was a made-for-television moment that ended with  a shot clipping the net then bouncing over.  As I watched, it was like everything went into slow motion – then the place erupted.

“It says so much about the strength of this sport in our community.  East Tennessee is a great place to play championship-level tennis.”

The other members of the national championship team from Knoxville were Jennifer Brady, Sherry Howell, Kristi Dunlap, Erica Renfree, Gina Grubbs, Jennifer Collins, Margaret “Meg” Scism, Stacy Lee Love, Michelle Harris, Rita Thome and Haely Bates.

Fort SandersIn its first match at the tournament, the Fort Sanders team lost to a team from the Caribbean.  After the 3-2 loss to the Caribbean team, the Knoxville team bounced back to beat New Mexico 5-0, Chicago 4-1 and Seattle 3-2.  When the Caribbean team lost to Chicago, Cherney’s team advanced to the semifinals, where they beat Orlando 4-1.

In the finals, the Knoxville team, coached by Lanny Martin, defeated Bozeman, Mont after Brady was pushed to a third-set, 10-point tie-breaker.  Ahead 9-8, Brady hit the heart-stopping shot that barely cleared the net.

“I’ve always known this team was good,” Cherney said, “but I didn’t know what to expect from them on the national level.  Now I do.

“Maybe I should just retire right now while we’re on top – I just don’t know what we can do to top this win,” Cherney joked.

Teams from Knoxville also won national titles in 2007 and 2008.
